At last count, there were 50 million monkeys in India.
बंदरों की बढ़ती आबादी से राजधानी को निजात दिलाने के लिए दिल्ली हाई कोर्ट ने खास पहल की है। हाई कोर्ट ने गैर सरकारी संस्था वाइल्डलाइफ एसओएस के साथ मिलकर काम करने का फैसला लिया है। इसके तहत बंदरों की नसबंदी और उनके वैक्सीनेशन का प्रॉजेक्ट शुरू किया जाएगा।
बंदरों को एक स्थाई यूनीक आईडी भी दी जाएगी, ताकि यह पता लगाया जा सके कि किस बंदर की नसबंदी की जा चुकी है। वन्यजीवों के संरक्षण के लिए काम करने वाले संगठन वाइल्ड लाइफ एसओएस ने हाल में दिल्ली हाई कोर्ट के सामने बंदरों की बढ़ती आबादी से निजात दिलाने के लिए एक वैज्ञानिक उपाय सुझाया था।
एनजीओ प्रतिनिधियों की ओर से कोर्ट को बताया गया था कि बंदरों की नसबंदी और वैक्सीनेशन ही एकमात्र तरीका है, जिससे राजधानी में इनकी संख्या कम हो सकती है। एनजीओ इस काम को आगरा में भी सफलतापूर्वक कर चुका है।

Notwithstanding the claims of Himachal Pradesh forest minister Thakur Singh Bharmauri, the population of monkeys has come down by 55,000 in the state as per the latest census, the population of simians have shown upward trend in the district during the period.
The minister had told the state Vidhan Sabha recently that the population of monkeys was 3,17,112 in the census conducted in 2004 and it had dropped to 2,260,86 in the latest census conducted in 2012.
However, according to the report of the district office of the department of forest, the population of monkeys that was 7,869 in year 2010 has risen to 11,869 in June 2013, when the census of the simians was held all over the state.
Monkeys in the district have become a major nuisance for the people and at many places people have stopped sowing crops as their crops were being destroyed by the monkeys and other wild animals.
Surprisingly, this situation has taken place at a time when the previous BJP government in the state had set up a monkey sterilisation center at Shashtar village of the district where as many as 22,228 monkeys were sterilised during 2006 to 2013. Only 42 monkeys were sterilised in 2006-07 and 2008-09, where as 3,432 were sterilised in 2009-10.
