Internet Ban:India Lost ₹6200cr in Last 5 Years

75 Cases Of Internet Ban In India, 50% in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: India was the most hurt globally by as many as 22 internet shutdowns that cost the country’s economy $968 million from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016, the Brookings Institution said.

The Washington DC-based nonprofit public policy organisation examined the economic impact of 81 cases of internet shutdowns across 19 countries. The internet disruptions, according to the paper, wiped out $2.4 billion worldwide, with India the most affected, followed by a $465 million loss in Saudi Arabia and $320 million in Morocco.

India ties with Iraq in total number of disruptions at 22, followed by eight in non-ISIS controlled parts of Syria, six in Pakistan, three in Turkey and two each in Bangladesh, Brazil, North Korea, Uganda and Vietnam.

The findings broadly attributed internet closedowns to regional or territorial responses to public security concerns, in addition to precautionary measures to prevent the misuse of internet-based social media services via mobile devices during competitive examinations. “India this year joined the ranks of countries, including Uganda, Algeria and Iraq, that have disrupted internet services in response to concerns over students cheating on exams,” the paper said.

The report quoted an Indian official as saying in one case that “considering the sensitive nature of the exam for recruitment of talents, internet service providers have been asked to shut down all internet-based social media services…to prevent misuse of mobiles during exam.”
In other instances, Indian officials ordered disruptions in response to public security concerns. “From these and numerous other examples, it is clear that over the last year, state interference with internet services is becoming more common, even in democratic states,” the paper added.
